Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is the latest game from the makers of Bloodborne, Dark Souls and Demon Souls – all of which will likely give you an idea of how challenging experience it provides. It successfully iterates on the key components that make up the so-called ‘Soulsborne’ genre – challenging bosses, RPG elements and punishing difficulty – sprinkling in some much-appreciated new features that’s in-keeping with Sekiro’s 16th century Japan setting.

The game follows a once-great samurai warrior known as “the one-armed wolf”, who suddenly finds himself tasked with protecting a young child from the dangerous Ashina clan in heavy pursuit. This forces players to quickly educate themselves in the ways of the Shinobi, learning different poise techniques and ninja abilities in the hopes of regaining lost honour.

Follow the path of vengeance in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

The shakeup in setting helps Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice feel and look distinctly unique when compared to the Soulsborne games that have come before. Key to this is the game’s grappling hook, which makes it easy for you as the one-armed wolf to easily navigate levels – it removes the need to walk all the way back to the place you died, eating up valuable time. It’s still no cake walk, however, with resources and combat skill remaining as important as ever.

    Challenging boss battles

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice features an eclectic mix of end-level bosses and mini-bosses, both of which will test your wits and ninja skill ability to the point that some may take hours depending on how quickly you learn. The majority of them boast excessively large health bars, with a lot of the enjoyment from Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice being the sense of accomplishment you feel after besting one of them.

    Stealth sections and single-blow attacks

Another way Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice differs from previous Soulsborne games comes in its offering of stealth sections, where you are able to save using up time, energy and valuable resources and kill enemies in just one blow. This technique won’t work on bosses, but helps getting through the world less irksome than, say, Bloodborne or Dark Souls. It’s part of the vast suite of ninja skills at your disposal.
