Everything you need to know about Nintendo Switch controllers

Never miss a deal on a Nintendo Switch controller with Consoles.com. We compare dozens of prices on a large range of official and licensed third party Switch controllers to find you the best deals and offers out there.

The Nintendo Switch is such a unique type of video games console, one type of controller simply won’t cut it. The good news is that you get two gamepads right out of the box in the form of Joy-Con, which stay attached to the Switch screen for handheld play but can be broken off and shared between two players for independent use. There is, however, more than just one way to play.

Jumping in as player two has never been easier than on Switch, but there are loads more Nintendo Switch controller options to consider. You see, while tilting a joy-con on its side is good, any game that demands precise control is better played on a gamepad specifically designed for undocked play. The Nintendo Switch Pro controller is a good example of this, but other viable options include those developed by PowerA and other throwback-style or limited-edition controllers.

Official special edition Nintendo Switch controllers

The Nintendo Switch Pro controller is right up there with PlayStation’s Dualshock 4 in terms of comfort, feeling good to hold and rendering your inputs smoothly in game It’s wireless, is smart to look at and features a D-pad (unlike Joy-Con) which makes it the ideal choice for fighting games. There have been various special editions of the Nintendo Switch Pro controller released, celebrating such top-tier games as Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Splatoon 2.

Coloured Joy-Con

Different coloured Joy-Con for every occasion

Most Nintendo Switch consoles either come with a pair of Blue/Red or Silvery Grey Joy-Con. There is, however, a wide swathe of other colours that are sold separately, working well to make your Nintendo Switch more distinct. We compare prices for a decent number of them right here on Consoles.com, from eye-catching Neon Yellow to Splatoon 2’s Neon Green and Pink. You can count on us to add more as they release.

First party or just licensed

There’s plenty of great licensed third party controllers on this page, but for the gold standard of Switch controllers, you’ll want to look at the official options from Nintendo.

Wired or wireless

For some, a wired pad is perfectly fine, in which case you can expect to spend a bit less on a pad. However, wireless is the new standard that gamers have come to expect, and thankfully there are a huge number of wireless options available. Third party controllers such as Hori and PowerA offer cheaper alternatives to the official Pro Controller, which are a great choice if you don’t mind making a few concessions on areas such as rumble feedback.

Joy-Con or classic controller

Joy-Cons, as discussed above, are highly versatile options that mean you’re effectively getting two controllers in one when buying a pair. However, some players find them a bit fiddly to use, and so would prefer a classic style pad. We recommend testing both out before committing to a big order of one or the other style!
