Though several years old, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 retains a dedicated following thanks to its superb online multiplayer. Featuring several modes that seem destined to go on to become trademarks of the series for years to come, Black Ops 4 still has plenty left to offer and is available with several popular PS4 bundles.
Without doubt, Black Ops 4’s most popular feature remains its Blackout mode. Added to the game in lieu of a traditional campaign mode that Call of Duty games are typically known for, Blackout proved more than an ample replacement, anticipating many of the burgeoning battle royale genre’s best features and offering them alongside the classic Call of Duty online multiplayer precision. Up to 100 players drop in to a wide range of different locales and must loot for weapons before fighting it out in an attempt to remain the last player standing. Blackout comes with several sub-modes, which subtly tweak the mechanics and add entirely new strategies for approaching the battle, such as ‘Close Quarters’, which limits the number of long-range weapons available and forces players into more aggressive, close range combat.
Alongside Blackout is the traditional modes that CoD purists have come to expect from the series, including classic deathmatch and team deathmatch. Another classic multiplayer mode that hasn’t seen much airtime in the Call of Duty series but is present in Black Ops 4 is zombies. While not exactly what you’d expect from CoD’s focus on realism, this co-op mode is a fantastic addition when combined with CoD’s well-tuned shooting mechanics. With dozens of variables to tweak, you can enjoy a completely customisable zombie-shooting experience that never plays out quite the same way twice.
